New to Blogging…

I have no idea what I’m doing, so be gentle. My name is Rachel, I am 26 years old and majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies. I am graduating this year, Spring of 2019 and it has been a long time coming. I am very excited to share my last semester learning about our environment. I am a huge Marine Biology nerd, so learning more about the environment and preserving our planet and it’s beautiful life, is definitely something I am passionate about.

  1. Nice to meet you Rachel. I am also a big Marine Biology nerd. Have you had any Marine Biology classes? – Maybe we were in a few together.

    • Hey! I have only had one class, in my college in Az before moving here (so I doubt we had any together, haha!) I wish I had time to do more, but I was also considering returning to school a bit later in life for a MB degree, if time and finances permit. 🙂 What is your favorite Marine animal? I am a huge shark advocate, and I’m passionate about Great White sharks, I know a little too much about them.

  2. Rachel,

Maybe you can apply for masters in Marine Biology. You’re in a great location to spot White Sharks. Have you checked out The White Shark Conservancy? http://www.atlanticwhiteshark.org/ They are located in Chatham, MA.

I have many favorite marine animals but I’d have to choose Penguins. I am located in the wrong region of the world to study them though! Its on my bucket list to visit South Africa to see African Penguins in the wild and volunteer at SANNCOB (penguin rehabilitation and abandoned chick penguin grow out and release). I used to volunteer at the New England Aquarium in the Penguin exhibit and that’s where my love of these birds blossomed.

  3. Hi Rachel,

Marine Biology is such a fascinating career choice. I see that you and Holly were discussing great white sharks. My kids love sharks and we all watch Shark Week together on the Discovery Channel every summer. It’s our favorite summer activity on those days that are just too hot to go outside until the sun goes down.

Did you happen to catch the video on the news and web with the female Marine Biologist that was swimming with a very big Great White shark? I believe the shark’s name was Deep Blue (the shark was featured in shark week last year). It was surreal, beautiful and amazing to see her swimming right along side of it and even “petting” the shark. Check it out if you get a chance.

    Have a great semester,
    Tara

  4. Hi Rachel!

I hope this is a good last semester. My last semester will be this Fall. I wish you the best of luck!

  5. Hey again! I don’t think I could get a Masters in MB as I only had one course in it (and I am terrible at science/math). I know, I am so excited to be out here. Since I only moved a few years ago, I have not gotten to check it out. But I definitely will now, thank you!

I knew someone obsessed with penguins, they are adorable little things. That sounds like a great bucket list. I’d love to cage dive in South Africa with some sharks, maybe here as well!

  6. Tara,
Shark Week is my favorite! I do believe I have seen that one where she swims with them. They are such beautiful and docile animals. Their reputation is ruined by Hollywood, and it’s heartbreaking.

    Nina,
Same to you, good luck at graduation! 🙂

  7. Hi Rachel,

Marine Biology has been a favorite of mine since I was little due to the fact the my sister wanted to be a marine biologist.

    Have a good semester!
